For years, I lay in state.

My brain smothered

by a menacing malingerer

seeking to steal my senses

and stifle my spirit.

My soul foundered

under the weight of the oppressive ogre

that held it captive

for half its lifetime.

Then, on one crisp autumn afternoon,

you — my hero —

swept in

with one slice of your scalpel

and kissed my sleeping self

back to life.

(Dedicated to my neurosurgeon, Dr. Warren Wilson, at Harris Methodist Hospital.)
